BAföG (= “Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz” or Federal Education and Training Assistance Act) enables young people to choose a study programme that suits their skills and interests. BAföG funding is need-based and granted if the student’s own financial means or those of his or her parents or spouse or partner are insufficient for this purpose.
Half of the BAföG financial support is usually a grant, the remaining half an interest-free loan. A ceiling guarantees that students only need to repay a maximum of EUR 10.010 of the total loan amount.
Please use the platform BAföGdigital or the BAföGdigital App to transfer applications, data and documents!
We recommend using the online ID function with BundID. In future, the BundID mailbox will also be available in addition to authentication at a high level of trust. Using BundID with your ID card: Electronic residence permit: You will receive it from the foreigners authority if you are a citizen of a country outside the EU and live in Germany. Or: European Union Citizen Card: Citizens of the European Union (EU) and nationals of the European Economic Area (EEA) can apply for this card if they are at least 16 years old. Further information you find here.
The simple BAföG Digital user account (user name and password), which can currently still be used as an alternative, will be gradually restricted and will no longer be available in future. Since February 6, 2025, new and follow-up applications can only be submitted with the BundID. Please convert your BAföG Digital user account into a BundID account and use it with the eID function.
New application forms have been available since March 2025. These are used automatically when applying via BAföGdigital. All application forms can be found here.
The old forms can still be used on a transitional basis.
