Here we answer frequently asked questions about student housing. If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact us.

Application Process

We have summarized the application process for you here.

You may be eligible if you study at one of the following universities:

  • University of Potsdam
  • University of Applied Sciences Potsdam
  • Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF
  • University of Applied Sciences Brandenburg
  • Technical University of Applied Sciences Wildau

Unfortunately, we cannot consider students from private universities.

Eligibility for student accommodation is limited to students in their first degree program:

  • Bachelor's,
  • Master's,
  • Diplom
  • Staatsexamen

Allocation Guidelines (English reading aid)
 

You are not eligible if:

  • You have reached the age of 30 within two months before the start of the semester for which you applied.
  • You are seeking to pursue a further undergraduate degree (e.g. a second bachelor's degree) after completing your first undergraduate degree (e.g. a bachelor's degree).
  • You are seeking to pursue a further degree after completing a master's degree.
  • You are a doctoral candidate, Ph.D. or trainee lawyer.
  • Your current registered address has been within the catchment area of your higher education institution for at least six months. This is defined by postcode.
  • For the Potsdam location: postcodes 140..., 141..., 144..., 145..., 1461.., 1462..
    For the Wildau location: postcode 15745
    For the Brandenburg location: no restrictions

    Further exclusion criteria include, among other things:

  • Breach of contract or ban from the Studierendenwerk West:Brandenburg
  • You have lived in the Studierendenwerk West:Brandenburg halls of residence without a valid rental contract and/or without consent.

There is a lack of student accommodation in Potsdam, Brandenburg an der Havel and Wildau. Here are some tips for improving your chances:

  • Early application
  • Completing the application – as early as possible
  • Flexibility in the choice of accommodation and location (in Potsdam)

Unfortunately, it is not possible to provide specific information on opportunities and list positions.

You should submit your online application in full and be eligible to live in accordance with the allocation guidelines (English reading aid).

The regular allocation of housing for the winter semester begins

  • in July (Brandenburg an der Havel and Wildau halls of residence)
  • in August (Potsdam halls of residence)

For the summer semester begins

  • in January (Brandenburg an der Havel and Wildau halls of residence)
  • in February (Potsdam halls of residence)
     

Your application is only valid for one semester.


If we are unable to offer you a rental agreement at the end of the semester-based process, we will continue to consider your application after the start of the semester for which you applied. The entire application phase may therefore last until the end of the semester for which you applied. Your data will then be deleted if no contract has been concluded.

Yes. There may be several reasons for this, for example:

  • false and/or incomplete information
  • missing documents or multiple applications
  • applications via other formats (e.g. by email or post)
  • failure to meet a deadline or rejection of an offer or lack of response
  • invalid email address
  • Applying for a room is not binding.
  • If you wish to withdraw your application, please use the confirmation email and the link provided.
  • Alternatively, you can also send us an email at wohnen[at]stwwb.de.
  • Cancellation is no longer possible if you have already signed a legally valid rental agreement.
  • Yes. Please use the link in your confirmation email.
  • If this is not possible, please send us an email to wohnen[at]stwwb.de with your change requests.
  • Please do not forget to include your name and date of birth.

The deposit is currently 400 € and does not bear interest during the rental period.

Rent

Concluding the rental contract at the headquarters of the Studierendenwerk West:Brandenburg:

In our letter confirming your acceptance of the offer, we will inform you of the deadline by which you must sign the rental contract.
The rental contract must be signed in person at the Studierendenwerk West:Brandenburg. Please come and see us during office hours (Babelsberger Straße 2, 14473 Potsdam, Lange Brücke entrance).

Concluding the tenancy agreement by email or post (distance selling):

Instead of signing the contract on site, it is also possible to conclude the rental agreement without your personal presence. Please contact the Studierendenwerk staff directly.
In this case, you will receive all contract documents by email. The contract must then be signed in person and returned by post.
There is no entitlement to this conclusion by post.

There are no additional charges on operational costs!

Not included: Internet use (separate registration at the university necessary) and TV license fee

Room handover: Monday to Friday, from 7.00 to 15.30.
If the rental agreement starts on a Saturday, Sunday or a public holiday, the room cannot be handed over until the next working day. As a rule, it is not possible to move in early, as the rooms are rented out until the last day of the previous month.

Yes. According to the Reporting Act (Meldegesetz), every tenant is obliged to register at his/her competent registration office within two weeks after moving.

Generally, yes. However, students that are eligible for BAföG and do not live with their parents can be exempted from the licence fee. Information on the license fee is also available in English, French, Spanish, Chinese, Arabic and Russian. Find out what applies to you! Rundfunkbeitrag (EN)

Every tenant is obliged to provide a direct debit mandate. The monthly rent is due on the first day of the month. The Studierendenwerk must receive the payment on the third day of the month at the latest.

Yes, a short-term rental with a duration of at least one month and less than one semester (6 months) is possible. A monthly charge of 30 euros applies for all short-term leases.

You may only sublet your room with the approval of the Studierendenwerk West:Brandenburg:
General Terms and conditions of rental (§ 16)

Subletting must be requested in writing (informally, at least 3 weeks before the start of the subletting period), has a minimum term of 2 months, and is limited to a maximum of two semesters of residence.
Only subtenants who meet the requirements of the Studierendenwerks allocation guidelines will be accepted.

Subletting is only possible if you are temporarily living elsewhere as part of your studies (e.g., semester abroad, mandatory internship) and for the remaining period until the end of the contract (in the event of contract termination).

Please note:

Illegal subletting or subletting with the intention of making a profit (e.g., by charging extra rent) will always result in termination of the tenancy agreement.

The Studentenwerk cannot assist in finding subtenants.

The main tenant remains contractually liable with all rights and obligations (including proper return) even during the subletting period!

Due to the allocation regulations, it is generally not possible for the subtenant to take over the room.

No. The rental agreement and the enrolment do not depend on each other. Provisions on the duration of the contract or the possibility of termination are stated in the rental agreement or in the general terms and conditions of rental.

Please inform the Studierendenwerk immediately in writing when you are no longer eligible to student housing.

  • Long-term rental agreements: Termination is possible up to two months before the end of the semester at the end of the semester.
  • Short-term rental agreements end automatically at the end of the semester and cannot be terminated.

The Studierendenwerk must always receive notice of termination in writing, including the tenant's signature.

Termination Notice

The Studierendenwerk balances the accounts with regard to the deposit 6 months after the end of the rental relationship at the latest. A positive balance of the deposit account will be transferred to the account specified by the tenant.

Please make an appointment with the caretaker of your residence. The preliminary inspection should take place approx. 14 days before the end of the rental agreement. The room must be handed over at the latest by 10 am on the last working day before the end of the rental agreement in an orderly, tidy and re-rentable condition.

Dorm Life

The apartment comprises the living and sleeping area as well as an integrated kitchenette and a bathroom for sole use. The bathroom is equipped with a shower and the kitchenette with refrigerator and cooking facilities (see sample floor plan).

The apartments in the student residence are furnished with bed, mattress, (writing) table, chair, closet, mobile container and shelf.

The apartment size varies from 1-room apartments to 2.5-room apartments.


Please file a report to the Studierendenwerk or the caretaker immediately stating the reason. You must bear additional costs for the replacements or for cylinder changes.

During office hours you can consult the caretaker for door openings. Outside office hours, please call the emergency key service. You will find the contact on the notice board.

For spare keys a written request must always be sent to the person responsible under indication of the reason. Only if there is an important reason (e.g. in cases of child care, disabilities or need for long-term care after a disease) a second key can be made available.

Yes. Visitors can stay with you for free for up to 14 days within a period of six months (all visiting days are counted together).

In case of an extended visit, your visitor can live in your room for an additional monthly fee of 80 Euros after inspection and approval, provided that your visitor is enrolled as a student as well.

No. You are not allowed to remove or relocate furniture from the Studierendenwerk inside or outside the residence halls.

For reasons of hygiene and the protection of animals it is not allowed to keep pets in residence halls. Exceptions are made for small animals such as birds, hamsters, ornamental fish etc., which have to be kept appropriately.

You are not allowed to connect washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, heating and cooling appliances yourself. You will find washing machines and tumble dryers in the cellar of your hall of residence – they can be used for a fee.

An internet connection can only be provided by the respective university service provider (e.g. ZIM of the University of Potsdam) in a separate contract based on the existing LAN connections. Also it is not possible to feed-in other services (e.g., cable TV etc.) due to the limited capacities.

Smoking is prohibited in all staircases, hallways, common rooms and shared kitchens as well as in the sanitary facilities. The respective tenant will be charged for damages caused by smoking within the room / apartment.

All flatmates are equally in charge of cleaning and tidying up the common rooms (bathroom, kitchen, haallway) and can be held responsible for non-compliance. We recommend to introduce cleaning plans.
